The Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers have long been popular water-based playgrounds for boaters, anglers, kayakers, river-rafters and even inner-tubers. But a new sport has made its way to the waterways in and around Glenwood Springs: stand-up paddling. This fun activity also known as “river surfing” is an off-shoot of paddling upright in the ocean on a surfboard. It’s a sight more typically seen off the coast of Hawaii, not in the mountains of Colorado. Paddlers new to the sport can practice their maneuvers at the brand-new Glenwood Whitewater Park on the Colorado River. You can even sign up for lessons at the Aspen Kayak Academy.
